Day 1 — Tuesday, May 27
Arrive and Settle In
8–10 am
Depart Fuquay-VarinaAbout 2 to 2.5 hours. Download offline maps before leaving. Aim to arrive by 4 PM -- Visitor Center closes at 4:45.
En route
Optional stop -- Lower Cascades Falls2143 Hall Rd, just outside the park gate. Short 0.8-mile round trip if you want to stretch your legs before check-in.
3:00 pm
Check in at the Visitor CenterGet your key, pick up a trail map, head to Cabin 1.
After check-in
Unload and get settledClaim beds, unpack food, get oriented. Screened porch with rocking chairs.
Late afternoon
Bikes and lake trailBikes on park roads near the lake, or the flat Lake Trail. Papa can sit on the porch.
Evening
Steak tip dinnerPre-marinated at home. Cast iron sear. Corn on the cob if good corn is available, bread, butter.
After dinner
Campfire and first nightFirewood from the Visitor Center or Camp Host (~$7/bundle). Dark skies out here.
Day 2 — Wednesday, May 28
Waterfalls, Trails, and Mountain Pies
8–9 am
BreakfastEggs, bacon, toast. Coffee on the screened porch.
9:30 am
Visitor CenterMuseum, trail maps, deck overlook. Flat and easy for everyone. 5 min drive.
10:00 am
Upper Cascades Falls -- whole group0.6 mi round trip. Accessible overlook deck -- Adam and Papa stop here. Rhododendron and mountain laurel in full bloom along the trail. Stairs to the base for anyone who wants to go further.

Day 2 continued

Options -- split or stay togetherLower Cascades Falls (0.8 mi, swimming hole, 2143 Hall Rd) • Mountain bike singletrack (2568 Moores Spring Rd) • Stay at the cabin or lake area
Around noon
Regroup and lunchHot dogs and brats on the charcoal grill outside the cabin. Hot dogs for JJ, brats for everyone else.
2:00–4:30 pm
Free afternoonBikes on park roads, fishing off the lake pier (Grandpa Dan's lifetime license covers the kids), porch time.
Late afternoon
Tory's Den Cave (optional)Short hike from 1185 Charlie Young Rd. Revolutionary War hideout cave. Go if it works.
5:30 pm
Pizza mountain piesDan's pie makers. Butter bread, add sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni. Each person makes their own. Start early.
After dinner
S'mores and stargazingGraham crackers, chocolate, marshmallows. Minimal light pollution out here.

Pilot Mountain State Park25 min from Hanging Rock. Drive-to overlook of the Big Pinnacle. Free. 15-20 min.

Mount Airy -- Mayberry
  • Mayberry Jailhouse (free) -- locked in Otis's cell for the photo
  • Wally's Service Station (free) -- vintage squad cars
  • Granite Quarry Overlook (free) -- largest open-face quarry in the US
  • Andy Griffith Museum (optional, $8/$6)

Lunch in Mount AirySnappy Lunch (cash only, famous pork chop sandwich) or Leon's Burgers.

Head homeAbout 2 hours. Everyone except the driver will sleep in the car -- which is fine, because someone has to make sure you end up in Fuquay and not Fayetteville.

Plants to Watch For

Catawba Rhododendron
Bright magenta-pink clusters. Peak bloom late May through early June. Most visible on the upper trails.
Mountain Laurel
White and pale pink clusters. The crimped buds look like tiny folded parasols before they open.
Pinxter Azalea
Coral-pink with long protruding stamens. Scattered through the forest understory.
Pink Lady's Slipper
Native orchid. Rare and protected. Look down on the higher rocky trails.
Fire Pink
Vivid scarlet five-petaled flower on rocky ledges. Attracts hummingbirds.
Galax
Round glossy groundcover leaves. White flower spikes in late May. Common on all trails.
Turkey-Beard
Tall white flower spike. Found on exposed rocky ridges. Blooms late May through June.
